University of Minnesota Study

Effects of HYPER-EGG® on Piglet Diarrhea Prevention and Growth Performance

HYPER-EGG® is a registered Trade-Mark of J. H. Hare & Associates Ltd.

Study Overview

This study examined the effectiveness of HYPER-EGG® antibody products in preventing diarrhea and improving growth performance in piglets infected with ETEC K-88 bacteria.

Objective: Evaluate effects of HYPER-EGG K88® supplementation on diarrhea prevention and growth performance in ETEC K88-infected piglets.

Location: University of Minnesota
Subjects: Thirty 18-day old piglets (six per group)
Feeding Period: Days 1-14 post-weaning
Infection: All piglets infected orally on day 7 with 1012 CFU of ETEC K88

Feeding Regimen

Piglets were fed nursery diets with different supplements for 14 days post-weaning, then normal diet from days 14-28.

Group Diet Supplement Composition
Control EG 4Kg control egg powder (unimmunized)/T of feed
Test Group 1 ABEG 0.2% 2Kg HYPER-EGG K88®/T of feed
Test Group 2 ABEG 0.4% 4Kg HYPER-EGG K88®/T of feed
Test Group 3 ABDEX 0.2% 1Kg HYPER-EGG K88® + 1Kg Dextrose/T of feed
Test Group 4 ABDEX 0.4% 2Kg HYPER-EGG K88® + 2Kg Dextrose/T of feed

Key Findings

Diarrhea Reduction

  • All HYPER-EGG® groups showed reduced diarrhea incidence and severity vs. control
  • Statistically significant reduction in:
    • ABEG 0.4% group (4Kg/T)
    • ABDEX 0.4% group (2Kg HYPER-EGG® + 2Kg Dextrose/T)

Growth Performance

  • All test groups showed growth improvement vs. control
  • Significant body weight increase on days 10, 14, and 28
  • Day 28 weight increase: 1.7-2.5kg over control
  • Overall weight increase: 13-20% over control

Significant Findings

  • ABEG 0.4% and ABDEX 0.4% groups showed greatest improvement
  • During weeks 1-2, these groups had:
    • Greater ADG (Average Daily Gain)
    • Higher ADFI (Average Daily Feed Intake)
    • Improved feed efficiency
  • After switching to unsupplemented diet (weeks 3-4), benefits persisted

Note: Group 3 (ABDEX 0.2%) showed slight body weight improvement but not statistically significant compared to control.

Conclusion

Feeding piglets with nursery diet supplemented with HYPER-EGG K88® antibody products from day 1 to day 14 post-weaning prevented diarrhea, reduced diarrhea severity, and improved growth performance when challenged with ETEC K88.

The most effective formulations were ABEG 0.4% (4Kg HYPER-EGG K88®/T feed) and ABDEX 0.4% (2Kg HYPER-EGG K88® + 2Kg Dextrose/T feed), which showed statistically significant benefits in both diarrhea prevention and growth metrics.
